I recall reading a comparison between the Super Hornet and a Saab Gripen and liking the cost benefits of the Gripen the most. Lotta fighter in a smaller and cheaper platform.

Unfortunately Canada being a nation of great size, our requirement for dual engines stands pretty firm. The reality of us only procuring 18 planes means that the squadrons that need them, won’t get them, and there wont be enough airframes for training on our side alone. Which also means, we get to spend several millions more over 5 years to keep our legacy A/Bs from falling apart.

Looks like their range is only about a 100km difference, for the SH. I found the article. What I preferred was the lower operational cost and faster turn around time (higher purchase price though). And wouldn’t one engine be good enough when Gripens can pull off road landings? I think where the SH really wins is as a bomber platform. Not an argument for either I suppose. Maybe a mixture of both would be a good scenario. Could use the Gripens as the daily “driver” and use the SH when extra ground-smash payload is needed.

And what happens when you lose one engine in the Territories? It’s not like we have many air bases to hail from. The RCAF has what, six fighter squadrons?

True. What with the ice melting / waters staying open more I suppose more jets will be zipping around up there with nowhere to land. Valid point.
